The Swan Machine – Dean Parkin

£10.00

THE SWAN MACHINE by DEAN PARKIN

The book is now available to order as a pre sale. Subscription is closed. The price for the book is £10.

Those of you who’ve been to Poetry Trust events will know Dean Parkin as the tall bespectacled figure dashing about making sure that poets and audiences are in the right place at the right time. Some of you will also know that he is an excellent poet and you will have sought out his various pamphlets. We at The Rialto want to produce Dean’s First Full Collection of poems, provisionally entitled The Swan Machine.

Originally created as a subscription publication which has a long and honourable history going back to the Seventeenth Century, and it is thought to have been invented to avoid dependence upon fickle patrons. We’re using this method to publish Dean’s book. All subscribers’ names have been listed in the book. Thank you for making the book happen.

Here’s a sample poem: there’ll be others on the website as we go on with the production, but, as you can see, his poetry is accessible and joyous.

SWEET OFFER

Do you want a murray mint? I ask.
Not the best place, the beach, at night
in November, bracing you call it; wind
smattered with rain, as, deep in my pocket,
my fingers recover one of last summer’s
half-melted sweets. Further down the shore

you tell me what you thought I’d said:
Do you want to marry me? How I continued
It might be a bit sticky, and then
I’m not selling this to you, am I? As I fudged
in my jacket for something I held out
and pressed into your palm.

Dean Parkin
